Martijn Oosterbaan
Martijn Oosterbaan (1975) studied Cultural Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam. His MA-thesis on the historic pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain dealt with pilgrims narratives in relation to late modern religious tourism. In his dissertation research in the framework of the PIONIER research program he will focus on ‘Pentecostalism and Modern Mass Media in Brazil’. This project will investigate the influence of Evangelical television and radio broadcasting on the construction of (trans)national Evangelical communities and the relation between these Evangelical communities, the Brazilian state, and the Brazilian mediascape. The research will be conducted in an urban area of Rio de Janeiro where he will study the production and reception of mass-mediated religious messages among the lower- and middle-class population.

Martijn Oosterbaan defended his thesis 'Divine Mediations: Pentecostalism, Politics and Mass Media in a Favela in Rio de Janeiro' on 10 May 2006. At present he has a postdoc position at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen where he is affiliated to the NWO project: New media, public sphere and urban culture, headed by Prof dr René Boomkens.
